Joe Dante sent this article written by fellow director Edgar Wright for Empire magazine https://www.empireonline.com/movies/features/celebrate-our-cinemas-edgar-wright-big-screen-experience/. It is a big shout out for independent movie theaters, and a fun read, if you have a moment. A renowned fan of the big screen experience and (together with the likes of Quentin Tarantino and Christopher Nolan) of 35mm film, the 45 year old British director asks his readers to support the survival of their favorite local theaters by buying memberships during the COVI-19 shut down.
To celebrate this idea we picked Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver as this week’s SHC Movie of the Week.
Part thriller, part rom-com, part musical and an overall stylistic rollercoaster, Baby Driver premiered at SXSW in March of 2017 (the famous Austin film festival also a victim of the virus this year). It was one of the great hits of that summer and launched the career of Ansel Elgort as ‘Baby’, the daredevil getaway driver with a passion for music with a moral compass. Candy-colored (pay attention to the symbolism!) and rooted in the great tradition of chase films like Walter Hill’s The Driver (1978), Baby Driver is Wright’s most recent film, but evolved from an idea he had when he was 21 and then became a music video. Enjoy!
Baby Driver can be viewed on several platforms, among which are Amazon Prime, YouTube and iTunes
