Directed by Olivier Assayas (USA 2019; 127 mins. in English and Spanish with English subtitles)
A tropical thriller that drew comparisons with the work of John le Carré and Robert Stone for Nouvelle Vague progeny Olivier Assayas. Cuban-American relations are at a boiling point in the French director’s newest dramatic feature, based on true events as depicted in Fernando Morais’ The Last Soldier of the Cold War: The Story of the Cuban Five. Set between Havana and Miami in the early 90s, with an all-star cast (Edgar Ramírez, Penélope Cruz, Gael García Bernal, Ana de Armas, and Wagner Moura), the film is the tale of an espionage team (the titular “Wasp Network”) that infiltrated anti-Castro organizations responsible for violent terrorist attacks. Though the spy games buzz around glossy romances, Assayas’ film also offers a nuanced insight of the later years of the Cuban revolution -its costs and its worth, as seen through its characters eyes. Wasp Network can be viewed on Netflix.
